Otavalo is the most famous indigenous market in Ecuador which takes place on Saturdays in Imbabura province. The city is situated between the Imbabura volcano (15.118 feet) and the Cotacachi volcano (16.200 feet). Here you can find an impressive variety of all kinds of Ecuadorian handicrafts which attracts thousands of tourists.

Otavalo is a small city of about 50.000 inhabitants. It lies at 8.300 ft above sea level in a spring-like valley. Inside the city, the  best known spot is the Plaza de los Ponchos. Every weekend (Saturdays) hundreds of foreigners are arriving to search for traditional Otavalo fabrics like the amazing array of ponchos, coats, hats, scarves, gloves, pants and shirts of multicolored designs and embroiders that are exhibited for sale.

At town you may see indigenous people who are arriving the market place from many mountain trails surrounding the city. They come from nearby villages and towns such as Peguche, Agato and Iluman, to sell their products.
