Saquisili

The Saquisili market is one of the largest remaining indigenous markets in Ecuador. It is located in the Cotopaxi province, 13 kilometers from Latacunga province. The Saquisili fair, takes place every Thursday, where you can find products, animals and local crafts.

Saquisili is a city in the Andean Highlands 2 hours from Quito. It is famous for its market, which takes place in a few different areas of the city, and starts early in the morning when most of the indigenous people from surrounding villages are offering animals, clothes and food. Although the market is gradually becoming more touristic, it still maintains that authentic edge that provides visitors with a unique view of native life. More and more visitors, perhaps a little turned off by the commercial Otavalo market, come to Saquisili for a less touristic taste of traditional highland life. The vendors have been spotting this quickly, and you’ll find stalls devoted to selling Otavalo textiles, Tigua paintings and Pujili ceramics. Unlike Otavalo, however, these stands have not yet become the focus of the market: They’re secondary and the exception to the rule.
